4 Towel Tips For Cold Weather

In the winter issue of Northeast Carwasher, our very own Valerie Sweeney wrote an article about the small changes you can make at your wash to get the best performance out of your towels on the coldest days. Below are her top four winter towel tips.

1. Faster Towel Rotation:
Towels quickly freeze in cold temperatures once they get wet. It's important to switch them out frequently so they don't become a hindrance on the line. It's also not recommended to use damp towels in cold temperatures, dry towels work much better.

2. Switch from Microfiber to Cotton Towels:
On cold and icy days, microfiber might give you trouble because moisture can freeze the fibers which cause streaking on windows. Cotton towels are not affected by the cold temps as much. As a result, some washes switch to cotton huck towels for a few months and then switch back to microfiber in the spring.

3. Size Down Larger Towels:
It's a lot harder to work with large bath or 1/2 bath sized towels while wearing winter gloves. To make it easier for your employees to manipulate the towels, consider switching to a standard 16" x 27" towel for the winter instead.

4. Be Super Vigilant About Dirty Towels:
When hands are cold, or covered by bulky gloves, people are more prone to dropping towels. Be sure to train employees to never use a towel that has hit the ground because sand, gravel, or dirt could easily scratch a car's finish.
