How To Select The Right Towel Over The Phone

In the Spring issue of Northeast Carwasher, our very own Valerie Sweeney wrote an article explaining how to select the right towel over the phone. She breaks down the six different towel aspects to consider based on your needs.
1. Size Matters:
Towels come in many different sizes. Most carwashes are looking for a standard 16"x27" hand towel. However, if you want something different, it's important to vocalize this to your towel vendor. For example, if you wash large trucks, you may need a small bath towel (20"x40"). The more specific you are, the better chance you have of ordering the right towels.
2. Desired Thickness:
Are you happy with the thickness of your towels? Towels thickness is usually measured by the weight per dozen. The most common weights for a 16"x27" body towel is 3 or 4 pounds per dozen. Knowing the weight of your towels will make it easier to explain your desired towel's thickness (thinner or thicker) over the phone.
3. Low Pile or Standard Nap:
If the pile on the towel is important, please say so to your towel vendor because they usually carry a few different styles. Every carwash is different, and some prefer a low pile or sheared look due to the smaller amount of lint, while most carwashes choose a standard nap.
4. Color Choice
The most popular carwash towel colors are blue, green, red and white. If you are very particular about color, it's important to be specific, especially if shade matters. If you prefer a dark blue, make sure you explain that to your vendor, rather than just saying "blue".
5. Type of Hem:
Do you like traditional sewn hemmed edges or a selvedge edge towel? Because a selvedge edge can't unravel, they stand up well to repeated washing.
6. Desired Price:
If budget is your #1 priority, make sure to tell your towel vendor. They can work with you to find the right towel based on your budget. Towels also may go on sale, or maybe they're looking to move a certain color. You always have options.
