In the spring issue of Northeast Carwasher, our very own Valerie Sweeney wrote an article about how you can save money by prolonging the life of your towels. Below are the three biggest cost saving tips
Follow Washing Instructions:
Whether you're using microfiber, terry, or huck towels, each has ideal washing instructions. By following the instructions on the tag, you can prolong the life of your towels and save money. For example, microfiber cannot be washed in hot water or dried on high heat as the fibers will melt, ruin the towel's absorbency, and shorten its lifespan.
Separate Towels:
It's best to use different towels for cleaning different parts of the car. You can either use different types of towels for each application or have different colors for various tasks. For example, grease is very hard to wash out of towels and will streak windows and ruin upholstery. This is why it's best to have separate towels for wheel wells and door jams, and inexpensive rags for maintenance work. Another great tip is to have some spill control pads and socks on hand for any leaks, spills, and drips. This will prevent employees from using towels for the wrong purpose.
Stop Towels From Disappearing:
Whether employees accidentally leave a towel behind or the customer "borrows" a towel and doesn't return it, lost or stolen towels add up. Monitoring your towel inventory daily or weekly and sharing the count with employees will help hold them accountable. Another recommendation is to have employees offer to spot dry a customer's car rather than letting them borrow a towel. Many washes even provide disposable courtesy towels for customers to use too.
